Customer service resume: example for call center, chat and support roles

Whoever reviews a customer service resume wants to know four things: which channels you’ve worked (phone, chat, email, social media, in person), at what volume, in what kind of support (general questions, billing, complaints, technical support, sales or retention) and with which tools. With that, they know where you fit.

Contact centers and support teams run on metrics: average handle time (AHT), first contact resolution (FCR), customer satisfaction (CSAT) or Net Promoter Score (NPS), service level agreement (SLA) adherence and quality assurance (QA) scores. Every company measures them its own way, so share yours with context and don’t compare them with numbers from other operations.

Below is a complete example for an agent who moved from the phones to a tier 2 escalations role, three summaries for different starting points and the keywords that come up most in call center and support postings. If you help customers in person at a store, the retail sales associate resume example may be a better fit.

Common keywords in customer service representative job postings

These terms show up often in job postings for this role. If they truly describe you, use them with the same wording as the posting so both the recruiter and the applicant tracking system (ATS) can find them.

Tips for your customer service representative resume

State the channel, type of support and volume

One line per job is enough: “inbound calls and chat for a utility’s billing line, about 70 contacts a day.” Answering general questions, handling complaints, retention and technical support are different jobs with different requirements. If you’ve worked both inbound and outbound calls, keep them separate.

Show your metrics next to the target

AHT, FCR, CSAT, NPS or QA scores only mean something next to the team’s target: “79% FCR against a 72% target” says far more than the number alone. If you don’t remember your numbers, say you consistently met or beat your targets and for how long. Don’t compare yourself with averages from other operations, because every company measures differently.

Your customer service resume is your first writing test

In chat and email support, spelling and grammar are part of the job, and your resume is the first sample: no typos, short sentences and a friendly tone. If you support customers in another language, say in which channels and at what level; bilingual roles often test you before hiring. If an employer also wants your resume in Spanish, Mi Resumen Pro can create an AI-translated version (Spanish, Portuguese, French or German) that you review before using it.

Make your availability clear

Support centers run on shifts, weekends and, often, remote work. If you can work rotating shifts, or you have a reliable internet connection and a quiet space to work from home, say so in one line of your summary: for many employers, it’s a practical screening criterion.

Make the most of customer-facing experience

Restaurants, retail, front desks and events teach you to calm an upset customer, handle payments and solve problems under pressure. Turn that into achievements with concrete examples, and add the resume skills call center postings ask for: active listening, empathy and clear writing.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a call center resume if I’ve never worked in one?

Start from any job where you dealt with customers (server, cashier, receptionist, camp counselor) and describe specific situations: complaints you resolved, payments you took, questions you answered. Add your typing speed, languages and availability, which are common requirements. More ideas in our guide to a resume with no experience.

What’s the difference between customer service and technical support on a resume?

Customer service handles account, billing and sales questions and complaints; technical support diagnoses problems with a product or service. If you’ve done both, separate them in your bullets and name the tools for each (a CRM versus a ticketing system or remote access tools). That way you can apply for both kinds of jobs.

What do AHT, FCR and CSAT mean?

AHT (average handle time) is the average time you spend on each contact, including after-call work; FCR (first contact resolution) is the share of issues solved on the first contact; CSAT (customer satisfaction) is the satisfaction customers report in a survey. Each operation sets its own targets, so always pair your number with its benchmark.

Should I include my metrics if they weren’t great?

You don’t have to include numbers. If your metrics don’t stand out, focus on what does: the type of support, case complexity, volume, training coworkers or improvements you suggested. What you should never do is inflate numbers that can come up in an interview or a reference check.

How do I show remote customer service experience?

Write “Remote” as the job’s location and show that you worked well on your own: the tools you used from home (softphone, CRM, team chat), the metrics you met and how you kept up with schedule adherence. For remote postings, also mention a reliable internet connection and a quiet, dedicated workspace in your summary.

Do I need a cover letter for a call center job?

High-volume hiring usually doesn’t require one, but it helps when you apply to a specialized team (bilingual, technical support, retention). A few lines on why you’re a good fit are enough; our guide on how to write a cover letter has a structure you can follow.
