Software engineer resume example: frontend, backend and full stack
A software engineer resume has to answer three questions from the engineering team fast: which stack you actually work in, how large and complex the systems you worked on were, and what changed because of your code. It works the same way for frontend, backend or full-stack developers: the technologies change, the logic doesn’t.
Endless lists of languages hurt your credibility. A well-described core stack works better, along with believable technical metrics (latency, test coverage, deployment frequency, incidents) and links to repositories or projects someone can actually open. Tech hiring almost always includes a coding assessment or technical interview, so don’t list anything you can’t defend there.

Junior frontend developer with a BS in Computer Science and a year of experience between an internship and a first full-time role. Work with JavaScript, TypeScript and React, build layouts with modern CSS and integrate REST APIs. GitHub profile includes three complete projects with tests and deployment, among them an expense tracker with authentication. Looking for a team with code reviews where I can keep learning.
Backend engineer with five years of experience in Java and Spring Boot, designing microservices and REST APIs for banking and insurance. Comfortable with PostgreSQL, Kafka, Docker and Kubernetes, with a strong focus on unit and integration testing. Took part in monolith-to-microservices migrations and on-call rotations, so I know firsthand what a system that’s hard to observe costs the team.
Senior software engineer with 10 years of experience, the last three as tech lead of a six-person team. Define the architecture, negotiate tech debt priorities with product and keep a sustainable delivery pace. Led a platform migration to the cloud with zero downtime and helped hire and onboard much of the team. Still write code every day in Go and TypeScript.

Common keywords in software engineer job postings
These terms show up often in job postings for this role. If they truly describe you, use them with the same wording as the posting so both the recruiter and the applicant tracking system (ATS) can find them.
Tips for your software engineer resume
Present your stack in context, not as alphabet soup
Group technologies by layer (frontend, backend, data, infrastructure) and leave out anything you touched once in a tutorial. In each job, name the tools used on that project: that way, readers see where and for how long you used React or Kubernetes instead of guessing from a standalone list.
Use technical metrics you can explain
Latency (p95, p99), load time, test coverage, deployment frequency, incidents or infrastructure cost are metrics an engineering team understands instantly. They have to be believable, and you need to know where they came from: in the interview you’ll be asked how you measured them and what exactly you did. If you don’t have the number, describe the technical change and its effect.
Link to repositories people can review
A GitHub or GitLab profile with two or three polished projects (clear README, tests, setup instructions, a live demo) is worth more than dozens of course repos. For entry-level roles, it’s close to essential. Mi Resumen has a projects section with a link for each repository or demo, and the PDF you download keeps real, selectable text.
Keep your software engineer resume to one page, two at most
With less than about 10 years of experience, aim for one page; senior engineers can use two. Condense older or unrelated jobs into a single line and spend the space on recent years. Education matters less as you gain experience, but always include it: some employers, government contractors and visa processes require a degree. If you’re coming from a bootcamp or another career, put your projects before your experience.
Use the job title from the posting
Postings call similar roles different things: software engineer, software developer, full-stack developer, SDE, application developer. Use the posting’s term in your headline if it describes what you do, and repeat the required technologies you truly know. Avoid calling yourself an “expert” in 10 languages. Frequently asked questions
What should I include on an entry-level software engineer resume with no work experience?
Projects first: two or three complete, deployed applications, explaining the problem each one solves and the technical decisions you made. Then internships, hackathons, open-source contributions and your education (a computer science degree, an associate degree or a coding bootcamp). Our guide to a resume with no experience helps you put it in order.
Should I rate my level in each programming language?
Skip bars and percentages. If you want to add nuance, separate the technologies you use daily from the ones you’re familiar with, or note your years of use. The real proof of your level is in your experience bullets and your repositories. How to group and present technologies: our guide to resume skills.
Do I need a computer science degree to work as a software engineer?
It depends on the employer. Many companies hire based on experience and a technical assessment, while some large corporations and government contractors require a degree, and work visa sponsorship often does too. If you don’t have one, make up for it with projects people can see and experience they can verify.
Which certifications are worth it for a software engineer?
The best known come from the cloud providers (AWS Certified Developer – Associate, Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate, Google Cloud Professional Cloud Developer) and, for Kubernetes, CKAD or CKA. They help most at consultancies and in infrastructure-heavy roles; at product companies, projects and experience carry more weight.
How do I tailor my resume to each software engineering job?
Spot the technologies and responsibilities the posting repeats, list them first in your skills and highlight related achievements. If they ask for something you haven’t used, don’t add it; you can mention it in your cover letter as something you’re learning. The Mi Resumen AI assistant compares your resume with a job posting you paste in and separates real matches from requirements you can’t back up.
How do I list a coding bootcamp on my resume?
Put it under education like any other program, with its name, the provider and the dates, and list your capstone or team projects in a projects section with links. If the bootcamp is your main technical training, place projects above work experience so recruiters see your code first.
